The Transfer of Coherence by Collisions of 3He Atoms

Magnetic resonance in the ground states of 3He has been studied through the interaction with metastable atoms in a gas discharge. Modulation showing the characteristics of the ground-state resonances is observed in a transverse beam of hght absorbed by the metastable atoms. This IS evidence of the transfer of transverse magnetization (coherence between eigenstates) by coilision. A theory is developed which explains the observations in detail. The fact that coherence can be transferred by spin exchange in collision offers the possibllity of exploitation in level-crossing or modulation experiments on spectroscopically inaccessible systems.
